TJU Honorary Professor and Alumnus Highly Recognized by Canadian Academy of Engineering

On June 15, 2020, Yves Beauchamp, President of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Academy of Engineering announced the election of fifty new Fellows and two new International Fellows into the Canadian Academy of Engineering. Jesse Zhu, an honorary Professor of Tianjin University’s School of Chemical Engineering and Technology was elected into the Board of Directors, the governing body of the academy. TJU Alumnus Chen Jinwen became a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering on the same day.

Professor Zhu is a Fellow of Royal Society of Canada (RSC), Director of Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE), and currently works as a Distinguished Professor and Canada Research Chair in Western University’s Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering.

He has long been engaged in the study and research about chemical reaction engineering, powder handling, and fluid-particle and multi-phase flow systems. He published over 400 referred journal publications and trained more than 200 Masters and PhD students and Post-Doctoral Fellows. In addition to fundamental research, he is particularly active in technology development and transfer, with 50 granted patents. Some of his inventions have been commercialized or now in the process of being commercialized. Several awards were credited to his research achievements including three major awards given by the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineering (R.S.Jane, Bentral and Syncrude), and the Fluidization Lectureship Award by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He also founded Global Academy of Chinese Chemical Engineers in 2009, which provides a high-level platform for all Chinese chemical engineers over the world. Prof. Zhu has been an Honorary Professor at Tianjin University since 2012.

Dr. Jinwen Chen is the Director of Downstream and Renewables at CanmetENERGY-Devon, Natural Resources Canada. He graduated from Tianjin University’s School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, China, where he obtained B.Sc. (1984), M.Sc. (1987) and Ph.D. (1990) in Chemical Engineering.

The media release by the Canadian Academy of Engineering thus introduced him, “Dr.Jinwen Chen has provided exceptional leadership as the Director of Downstream and Renewables at CanmetENERGY-Devon, Natural Resources Canada. He leads major R&D programs in bitumen upgrading, petroleum refining, biofuels, and life-cycle GHG emissions assessment. His internationally recognized achievements have strongly influenced government decision-making and policy development, technology innovation, engineering practice, and the advancement of fundamental science. He has received multiple government awards, for his outstanding accomplishments and impacts, and for his exceptional leadership. He has authored a large number of highly cited publications, and is frequently invited by universities, R&D organizations and industries to give lectures, seminars and presentations.”

The Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) is the national institution through which Canada's most distinguished and experienced engineers provide strategic advice on matters of critical importance to Canada. The CAE is an independent, self-governing, and non-profit organization established in 1987. Fellows of the CAE are nominated and elected by their peers, in view of their distinguished achievements and career-long service to the engineering profession. The 14-member Board of Directors is the governing body of the academy.
