3.Qualifications

Outstanding applicants, at home and abroad, shall exhibit good ideological and moral qualities with good personal characters, while holding a PhD degree from home and abroad by prestigious universities, and showing great academic potentials and brilliant achievements in related subject areas.

4.Responsibilities

4.1 Chair Professor

(a)Accurately grasp the development direction of the discipline, put forward strategic, forward-looking and creative research ideas, and lead the discipline to catch up or maintain the internationally advanced level in the frontier fields of scientific research.

(b)To improve the overall quality of teachers and research standard, and actively cultivate and bring in excellent talents.

4.2 Outstanding Young Professor

(a)Holding a high level of teaching results, the appointee should exhibit much of his or her abilities and experiences aligned with the talent standards with regard to excellence, high quality and surpassing performance. On the other hand, the appointee should complete the teaching tasks stipulated by the school and the university, carry out in-depth teaching research and reform, and achieve outstanding teaching achievements.

(b)With an independent research track conforming to the development of discipline, the appointee, as academic mentor, should be able to lead his discipline to serve the major needs of national economic and social development, and also to carry out internationally advanced academic research.

(c)The appointee should take on a major role in discipline establishment, talent base establishment, recruitment, and international exchanges and cooperation.

4.3 Outstanding Young Associate Professor

(a)It is required that the appointee, in all matters related to the field of his discipline, should exhibit the top-notch innovative talent training experiences and achievement with regard to adherence to the teaching and lectures. The appointees should complete the teaching tasks stipulated by the school or university, carry out teaching research and teaching reform, and achieve good teaching results.

(b)Taking years of high-performing scientific research in line with what the trend of the discipline requires, the appointee's professional performance should be deemed prominent and also nationally and internationally acclaimed by peers.

(c)The appointee should take on an active role in discipline establishment, talent base establishment, recruitment, and international exchanges and cooperation.

4.4 Young Associate Professor

(a) With his research track aligned to what the development of the subject requires, it is imperative that the appointee have some academic achievements in its research fields, showing considerable academic potential.

(b) The appointee should actively engage in the tasks related to the discipline building-up, and also typically arrange his time to take part in the high-level international academic conferences and other forms of international academic exchange in this field. Moreover, he should also be able to actively take on the tech-savvy projects in relation with the national, provincial or municipal level.

(c) Principally, one should have at least two years of teaching and research related work experience.

4.5 Postdoctoral Fellow

The appointee should be mainly engaged in the job scope of basic research, applied research, transformation of scientific and technological achievements and teaching assistance. One should also give support in talent team building, discipline construction and development of scientific research bases.

5. Work Support

The university, the state and Tianjin municipality jointly provide competitive salary and welfare benefits, generous research start-up funds and good working and living conditions. Those who need to settle down in Tianjin shall settle down in accordance with the policy requirements of Tianjin municipality. Chair Professors, Outstanding Young Professors, Outstanding Young Associate Professors are employed on the public institution system of contractual employment. Young Associate Professors, Associate Professors, Lecturers and Postdoctoral Fellows are signed labor contract. The relevant clinical positions in the affiliated hospitals shall be determined through consultation with the affiliated hospitals. Teachers joining the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology can choose to be stationed at the Zhejiang Institute of Tianjin University and enjoy favorable conditions for research support and local talent funding policies.

The Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline at Tianjin University has a profound history. Back in the 1920s, Tianjin University, formerly known as Peiyang University, set up the Industrial Chemistry Lecture Hall. Following the nationwide restructuring of institutes in 1952, the schools of chemistry from seven universities were merged into the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Tianjin University. 

The Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline at Tianjin University was one of the first disciplines to be recognized as first-level state key disciplines and "double first-class" construction project disciplines. It has ranked first in the national first-level disciplinary assessment five consecutive times and has passed the highest level of professional accreditation by IChemE three times. For six consecutive times it has won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award, an accomplishment no other discipline in the country has achieved. Ithe 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject and ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, the Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline at Tianjin University ranked 28th and 2nd respectively. 

The discipline adheres to the development philosophy of “abiding by first-class standards, cultivating first-class talents, earning first-class achievements, and making first-class contributions.” Through the efforts contributed by several generations, we are able to continuously bring together top-tier faculty, nurture their development, promote the development of the chemical engineering industry, as well as reforms in higher education for chemical engineering, and cultivate chemical engineering talent for the future.

1. Cultivate first-class talents for the future of chemical engineering

Based on the principle of fostering moral integrity, we focus on shaping students' national sentiment, global vision, innovative spirit, and practical ability in order to realize the all-round development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, and aesthetics in our students. We acted as the lead institute to unite with our sister colleges and universities and have won the first prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award six consecutive times. In addition, we take the lead in the development of Emerging Engineering Education in Chemical Engineering, and have formed a new model for the cultivation of "top-notch innovative talents in chemical industry in the new era". Together with other organizations, we started the AIChE Chem-E-Car Competition for Chinese College Students, and the Tianjin University Student Chapter has received the AIChE Global Outstanding Student Chapter Award four consecutive times. Our students have also had great success in national competitions such as the Challenge Cup” and the China College Students' “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition.

 

 

2. Adhere to the "Four Facings" and accelerate scientific and technological innovation

The Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline at Tianjin University is in the leading place in the field of mass transfer and separation in China, especially in distillation and crystallization technology. We also have significant advantage in cutting-edge fields of chemical engineering, such as Synthetic Biology, Green Chemical Processes and Product Engineering, Novel Catalyst Materials and Reaction Engineering, and Efficient and Clean Conversion and Utilization of Energy and Resources. We developed 11 national research bases and four national teaching bases, including the National Collaborative Innovation Centre of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin), which we cofounded with Nankai University and was recognized as one of the first 14 2011 Collaborative Innovation Centers,” and the Synthetic Biology Frontier Science Center, which was one of the first seven frontier science centers developed under the Ministry of Educations Everest Project.” In around the past five years, we have led 31 key national R&D projects and won the State Science and Technology Award twice. We have won the provincial and ministerial science and technology grand prize and first prize twice and 16 times respectively, and received more than 50 prizes from the industry associations. The research results of synthetic biology were selected as one of the Top Ten Advances in Chinese Science in 2017, and the “Great Changes: Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of Reform and Opening Up” exhibition.

 

3. Deepen international cooperation and broaden development landscape

The Chemical Engineering and Technology discipline at Tianjin University has passed the highest level of professional accreditation by IChemE, making it the first discipline in Chinas chemical industry to pass international professional accreditation. The chairpersons of IChemE praised the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Tianjin University for "driving the reform of chemical education in China and being one of the best chemical engineering disciplines in the world." To better serve the “Belt and Road” Initiative, we actively explore and promote the enrollment and training of foreign students. We have enrolled nearly 500 international students from 57 countries on six continents and have formed a cultivating mode with distinctive international characteristics. In around the past five years, we have established cooperation with renowned universities such as the University of Edinburgh and Georgia Institute of Technology, as well as major international companies such as Clariant Chemicals and AstraZeneca, signed more than 20 university- and school-level international cooperation agreements, and established 12 international joint bases or centers.
