School of Chemical Engineering, Synthetic Biology, approved at Tianjin University

On October 25th, the Ministry of Education issued a document deciding to establish a project for the frontier science centers of the six prestigious schools. The Center for Synthetic Biology of our institution was lucky enough to be selected.  

The universities participating in the evaluation are of strong strength. Among them, there are many famous universities such as Tsinghua University and Peking University. It is the result of unremitting efforts and painstaking efforts of teachers and students. 

Conference Argumentation 

The experts who attended the meeting included academicians Zhao Guoping, Ouyang Pingkai, Zhou Qilin, Zhou Qi, Cao Xiaofeng, Professor Zhang Xianen, Zhao Huimin, Lin Min, Li Yixue, etc.; Lei Chaozi, director of Science and Technology Department of the Ministry of Education, and Zou Hui, director of the Department of Basic Research .More than 30 people from Tianjin University Research Institute and related discipline experts attended the meeting. After the meeting, Li Jiajun, the secretary of the Party Committee of Tianjin University, and Zhong Denghua, the president, met with the leaders and experts. 

Yuan Yingjin, a professor at the School of Chemical Engineering at Tianjin University, reported on the construction of the Center for Synthetic Biology Science. The experts in the argument carefully reviewed the plan and launched a heated discussion. They agreed that Tianjin University has a long-term and solid working foundation in the field of synthetic biology research. It has the advantages and characteristics of multi-disciplinary, military-civilian integration, and has achieved certain progress in the field of synthetic biology. The results have reached the international advanced level. 

The construction project of the “Synthetic Biology Frontier Science Center” of Tianjin University fully reflects the characteristics of basic frontier, technological subversion, industrial revolution, military and civilian use, and has mature conditions for construction. The expert group unanimously agreed and passed the “Construction Program for Synthetic Biology Frontier Science Center” of Tianjin University. It is hoped that Tianjin University will further strengthen basic research, strengthen leading talent training and introduction of outstanding young talents, and deepen international cooperation. 

A major breakthrough in the field of synthetic biology (Professor Yuan Yingjin's team) 

Yuan Yingjin, a key laboratory of the Department of Systems and Bioengineering of the Ministry of Education, School of Chemical Engineering, Tianjin University, published the title of "Chemical Synthesis of No. 10 Chromosome Defect Target Location and Growth Representation" and "Perfect Design and Synthesis of V-Chromosome" Two studies of the circular phenotypic study, and three consecutive Nature articles, developed a series of original genomic rearrangement techniques and strategies to make major breakthroughs in the application of chemical reconstituted yeast. 

The article reports a fully chemically synthesized redesigned eukaryotic Saccharomyces cerevisiae chromosome 10, which is up to 707 Kb, creating a method for efficiently targeting growth defects, solving the problem of synthetic genomes causing cell inactivation and providing a new strategy for phenotypic and genotype association analysis helps to extend the understanding of genomic and cellular functions. The chemical synthesis of eukaryotic chromosomes that accurately match the designed sequence was first reported, and the current eukaryotic expression was verified and evaluated. At the same time, a customized method for artificially constructing the chromosome of Saccharomyces cerevisiae was developed, which provided new research ideas and research models for studying chromosome rearrangement, cancer, aging, and human chromosomal abnormal diseases.
