About Tianjin University

Tianjin University(TJU), founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, is the first modern university in China and a National Key University directly under the administration of the Ministry of the Education. Living up to the motto “Seeking Truth from Facts” and the spirit of “precision in learning and strictness in teaching” , Tianjin University has cultivated a large number of high-level talents, and made outstanding achievements. In 1959, TJU became one of the first National Key Universities and in later years was among the first group of universities included in the Project 211/985 and the ‘Double First-Class’ Initiative.

About School of Chemical Engineering and Technology

School of Chemical Engineering and Technology(SCET) has a long history. Back to 1925, Peiyang University, the predecessor of Tianjin University, established the Industrial Chemistry Lecture Hall. Renowned chemical engineering experts like Hou Tepang and Ding Xuhuai once taught there.

In 1937, some universities including Peiyang University formed the Northwest United University and relocated to Xi’an; the Chemical Engineering Department was formally established.

During the nationwide university restructuring in 1952, Chemical engineering departments of seven universities were incorporated into SCET, which has nurtured numerous talented young scholars since then.

In 1984, SCET co-established the Institute of Petrochemical Technology with China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec), and trained numerous graduates over years.

In 1986, SCET co-established the joint State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering, and was responsible for the distillation and separation branch laboratory.

In the 1990s, Tianjin University’s Chemical Engineering and Technology programme was selected as a key construction discipline in Project 211 and Project 985.

In 2007, Chemical Engineering and Technology programme was selected as a first-level national key discipline.

In 2008, SCET became one of the first two Asian schools, and the first Chinese school to receive the Master Level accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE).

In 2013, Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering (Tianjin) became one of the first 14 designated national platforms in Plan 2011.

In 2014, SCET received the Master Level accreditation by the Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) again.

Till 2017, the Chemical Engineering and Technology programme ranked top for four consecutive times(Year 2002 ~ Year2017) in the national evaluation, and in 2017 it was selected for the national ‘Double First-Class’ Initiative.

In 2018, SCET obtained the first prize in the National Teaching Achievement Awards for the fifth time(Year 2001~ Year 2018), and the Master Level accreditation by IChemE for the third time.
