Dr. Yingjin Yuan is a professor affiliated with School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University. He was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2021. He was also elected as IChemE Fellow in 2010. Dr. Yuan received all his academic degrees (BS, MS and PhD) from Tianjin University and was a senior visiting fellow at MIT. He was awarded the “National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars” in 2004. Dr. Yuan was the academic leader of the Innovation Research Group of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and the chief scientist of the National Key Basic Research Program (973 Program). He is the editor-in-chief of the Synthetic Biology Journal, and the director of Frontier Science Center for Synthetic Biology (Ministry of Education). Dr. Yuan has been working in the field of Biochemical Engineering, especially the development of yeast artificial chromosomes. He was awarded the “Hou Debang Chemical Science and Technology Achievement Award” in 2017. He was also awarded the “Distinguished College Teacher Prize (the Ministry of Education)” in 2007.

Dr. Yuan and his research group developed the PCRTag mapping (PoPM) strategy for efficient identification and the CRISPR-mediated method for repairing of unexpected bugs during chromosome synthesis. With the developed technologies in bug mapping and debugging, his group successfully synthesized two yeast artificial chromosomes, synV and syn X. It was noted that synV “perfectly” matches all designer sequences. The achievement was selected into the China's top 10 scientific advances in 2017. Dr. Yuan also endeavors to promote industrial applications of yeast artificial chromosomes, which include digital information storage and endowing yeast strains with advantages in increased production of valuable chemicals. He invented a precisely controlled SCRaMBLE (synthetic chromosome rearrangement and modification by LoxP-mediated evolution) system that can be used for directed genome evolution.
